The University
of Karachi, an Overview:
The
University of Karachi, which is spread over 1200 acres of land, was created as
a Federal University by the parliament in 1951. However, its position was
redefined in 1962 by another act of parliament as the university of Sindh
province. The Karachi University Act was approved on October 23, 1950, and
following a revision in 1951, it was implemented, with Prof A. B. A Haleem as
its first Vice-Chancellor. The University of Karachi served as an examination
University for associated institutions for the first two years. It began
teaching and doing research at two faculties of arts and sciences in 1953.
The
institution, which began with a student body of 50, has grown to include 53
departments and 20 internationally renowned research centers and institutes
organized under eight faculties: Arts, Science, Islamic Studies, Pharmacy,
Management, and Administrative Sciences, Law, Education, and Medicine. As of
June 30, 2018, the number of regular students enrolled at the Campus was
slightly more than 41,000 (approximately). Over 700 instructors and 2100 support
workers work at the school.
Today's
Karachi University:
Today,
Karachi University is the country's largest university. It has eight faculties
with which all of the city's colleges are linked. Five of these faculties,
Arts, Science, Pharmacy, Management and Administrative Science, and Islamic
Learning, hold B.S., M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. classes on campus, while the
Faculties of Medicine, Law and Education assess students accepted to their
connected institutions. Under all faculties, research programs leading to
M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees are available.
A
New Development Era Has Begun:
The
University has now embarked on a massive multidimensional development effort,
with a focus on capacity growth and quality enhancement. Since its foundation,
the university's constitutional and statutory bodies have met at regular
intervals, significantly reinforcing the process.
The
University has been able to recruit over 200 new instructors to various
faculties and departments as a result of the regular hosting of Selection
Boards. Many departments in scientific and arts universities have lately been
reinforced by updating facilities in order to improve their quality and
production.
