of Irrigation Department Punjab:
Irrigated
agriculture is the most important indicator of economic development potential,

workforce. Over half of Punjab's agricultural production comes from farmlands
irrigated by one of the world's biggest contiguous irrigation systems. The
massive irrigation conveyance network serves a cultivable command area of 21.71
million acres (8.79 million hectares) with cropping intensities ranging from
120 to 150 percent.
Water
is a key resource for Pakistan's long-term economic growth, and irrigated
agriculture plays a significant role in the country's socio-economic life. The
Punjab Irrigation Department has a long-term strategy for the irrigation
sector: to deliver enough, equitable, and dependable irrigation supplies to
Punjab's cultivable areas, with an emphasis on broad-based institutional
changes, in order to increase agricultural production.
The
Punjab Irrigation Department turned Punjab's dry plains into the Indian
Subcontinent's granary, providing riches to the region's hardworking farmers.
Over a century of deteriorating infrastructure is being pushed to its limits in
order to meet the ever-increasing needs of the agricultural and non-farm
